Dear Supporters and Staff,
I hope this letter finds you well. As we continue our mission to provide safety, support, and advocacy for survivors of domestic and sexual violence, I want to share some important updates regarding recent advocacy efforts and legislative achievements that impact our work.
The state of Alabama has recently taken a significant step in prioritizing the needs of sexual assault survivors. Governor Kay Ivey has awarded a statewide grant of just over $875,000 to the Alabama Coalition Against Rape (ACAR). This funding will enhance the quality and accessibility of services for rape victims across the state.
As a proud member agency of ACAR, SafeHouse benefits from the coalition’s efforts to maintain high standards of service throughout Alabama. ACAR plays a crucial role in ensuring the equitable distribution of funding across the state. This allows agencies like ours to continue providing essential services to those in need. Additionally, ACAR helps create and oversee service areas. For example, SafeHouse serves sexual assault survivors in Clay, Coosa, Chilton, and Shelby Counties. Service areas ensure that survivors know exactly where to turn for help, no matter where they are in the state.
This grant will support the continued training and technical assistance for first responders. Medical and law enforcement professionals are often the first point of contact for survivors. By improving the skills and knowledge of these frontline workers, we can ensure that survivors receive the compassionate and professional care they deserve. The grant also helps sustain the vital services provided by ACAR’s 15 member agencies. Services include 24-hour hotlines, direct referrals, counseling, crisis intervention, and advocacy in medical and criminal justice matters.
At SafeHouse, we are committed to upholding these standards and continuing to provide the highest level of care to survivors in our community. As we celebrate this legislative win, we also recognize that there is more work to be done. SafeHouse remains dedicated to pushing for further advancements that protect and empower survivors. We will continue to advocate for policies and resources that address the root causes of violence and provide comprehensive care for all those affected.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
Warm regards,
Janelle Sierra

Being a sexual assault victim. It would be nice to have help with counseling for my mental health in my area of Lee County. I’ve struggled for a couple years now from the tragedy I endured being a victim of rape. I just can’t seem to find any Counseling that is accepting new clients.
