Our Communities Recognize April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing understanding of sexual violence, supporting survivors, and strengthening prevention efforts in our communities.
This year, SafeHouse is honored that seven municipalities, all four counties we serve—Clay, Coosa, Chilton, and Shelby—and the Governor of Alabama have issued proclamations recognizing April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

These proclamations represent more than a symbolic gesture. They publicly acknowledge that sexual violence is a serious issue that affects individuals, families, and communities. When local and state leaders recognize Sexual Assault Awareness Month, they help create space for important conversations about prevention, survivor support, and community responsibility.
Sexual assault awareness exists because, for too long, sexual violence was minimized, hidden, or treated as a private matter rather than a public concern. Awareness efforts help challenge that silence. They bring the issue into the open and reinforce the message that survivors deserve to be heard, believed, and supported.
Proclamations also signal that preventing sexual violence is a shared responsibility. Community leaders, schools, service organizations, and residents all play a role in creating environments where people feel safe, respected, and empowered to seek help when they need it.
At SafeHouse, we see every day how important community support is for survivors. Advocacy, prevention education, and crisis services are most effective when communities stand together in recognizing the problem and committing to solutions.
We are grateful to the municipalities, counties, and state leaders who have taken this step to recognize Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Their proclamations help amplify the message that sexual violence prevention and survivor support matter in every community we serve.
Throughout April, SafeHouse will continue working with schools, community partners, and residents to raise awareness and promote healthy, respectful relationships.
